Composer and songwriter Jerome Kern (1885-1945) is best remembered for his Broadway and film work including the lovely melodies from Showboat, "Old Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," and "Bill," as well as standards such as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "The Way You Look Tonight". The collection consists primarily of show music, including some holograph sketches. Robert Lewis (later changed to "Louis") Balfour Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on November 13, 1850. He attended the University of Edinburgh intending to become a civil engineer like his father, but ill health curtailed his studies and prompted him to travel to warmer climates. This inspired Stevenson to write stories, novels and essays about his travels. While in France he met American artist Fanny Osbourne.
